What’s the Difference Between a Temporary and Permanent Dental Crown?

Dental Crown

Dental crowns are a popular and effective solution for restoring damaged teeth, improving their function, and enhancing their appearance. Whether you have a cracked, weakened, or severely decayed tooth, a dental crown can help protect it and prevent further deterioration. However, when undergoing a dental crown procedure, you may receive a temporary crown before getting a permanent one. But what exactly is the difference between the two? Understanding these differences will help you make an informed decision about your dental health.

What Is a Temporary Dental Crown?

A temporary dental crown is a short-term protective cap placed over a tooth while a permanent crown is being fabricated in a dental laboratory. These crowns are typically made from acrylic, composite resin, or stainless steel and serve as placeholders until the final restoration is ready.

Temporary crowns are crucial for protecting the tooth and maintaining its function during the waiting period. Since they are not as durable as permanent crowns, they require careful handling. Patients should avoid chewing hard or sticky foods and practice good oral hygiene to ensure the temporary crown stays in place.

What Is a Permanent Dental Crown?

A permanent dental crown is a custom-made, long-lasting restoration designed to fit perfectly over your prepared tooth. It is crafted from high-quality materials such as porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these. Permanent crowns are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth in terms of color, shape, and function.

Once your custom crown is ready, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and bond the permanent one in place using dental cement. With proper care, a permanent dental crown can last for many years, providing strength, protection, and aesthetic improvement.

Key Differences Between Temporary and Permanent Crowns

  • Material:

Temporary crowns are usually made of resin or metal, while permanent crowns are crafted from porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys, or a mix of materials.

  • Durability:

Temporary crowns are designed to last a few weeks, whereas permanent crowns can last up to 15 years or more with good care.

  • Appearance:

Temporary crowns may not match the exact color of your natural teeth, while permanent crowns are customized for a perfect match.

  • Fit and Comfort:

Since temporary crowns are a temporary solution, they may not fit as perfectly as permanent ones.

  • Functionality:

Temporary crowns allow normal function but should not be subjected to excessive pressure, whereas permanent crowns restore full biting and chewing capability.

Why You Need a Temporary Crown

Temporary crowns serve multiple purposes, including:

  • Protecting the tooth from sensitivity and damage while waiting for the permanent crown.
  • Maintaining proper spacing in your mouth to prevent teeth from shifting.
  • Allowing you to eat and speak comfortably while waiting for the final restoration.

If you’re searching for Dental Crowns in Chandler, AZ, it’s essential to find a qualified dentist who provides high-quality materials and expert care. Temporary crowns are an integral part of the dental crown procedure, ensuring that your tooth remains protected until your permanent crown is ready.

How Long Does a Temporary Crown Last?

Temporary crowns usually last between two to four weeks, depending on how long it takes for your permanent crown to be made. During this period, it’s essential to follow your dentist’s instructions and avoid foods that could damage the temporary crown.

Getting a Permanent Dental Crown

Once your permanent crown is ready, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and cement the new one in place. Before bonding, your dentist will check the fit and make necessary adjustments to ensure comfort and proper bite alignment. With good oral hygiene and routine dental checkups, your permanent crown can last for many years, giving you a long-term solution for your dental needs.

Finding an Affordable Dentist in Chandler

Getting a dental crown is an important investment in your oral health. If you’re looking for an Affordable Dentist in Chandler, you’ll want to find a professional who offers quality care at reasonable prices. Many dental offices provide flexible payment plans and financing options, making it easier for patients to afford the care they need.

Conclusion

Understanding the difference between temporary and permanent dental crowns is crucial for anyone undergoing this procedure. Temporary crowns act as short-term protective covers, while permanent crowns provide lasting strength and aesthetics.

If you need Dental Crowns in Chandler, AZ, be sure to consult an experienced dentist who can guide you through the process and provide the best possible treatment. Additionally, if affordability is a concern, searching for an Affordable Dentist in Chandler can help ensure you receive high-quality care without breaking the bank.

Maintaining good oral hygiene, following your dentist’s recommendations, and scheduling regular checkups will help extend the lifespan of your dental crown, keeping your smile healthy and beautiful for years to come.

From the moment that you walk into this office you know that you're in a place of professionalism and that you'll be in good hands. We were greeted by a very pleasant receptionist, an excellent Dental Hygienist and Dr. Aaron Johnson making up the dental team that saw both my husband and myself. All three of these people were so pleasant, knowledgeable and professional. Even though we obviously were there for dental reasons, it felt as if we're back visiting old friends that we hadn't seen for a long time! If you're looking for a dental practice, look no further, because Progressive Dentistry & Orthodontics is the place for you!

I had a great experience at Progressive Dentistry. I have neglected caring for my gums in the past so I had pretty severe periodontal disease. From the moment I walked in to when I left everything was clearly explained and laid out for me, pricing was discussed beforehand and I was aware of every step. The staff and doctor were very friendly and informative. They spent ALOT of time during my deep clean making sure every bit was out and even following up with xrays more than once to verify. I am so grateful for my healthy new mouth and I will be going back to Progressive for all future dental care.
