Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly, causing pain, discomfort, and concern about your oral health. Whether you are experiencing a severe toothache, a broken tooth, swollen gums, or a possible dental infection, getting the right care promptly can help prevent the problem from becoming more serious. If you need emergency dental care in Chandler, AZ, recognizing the warning signs and seeking professional guidance are important first steps. Our team can help you understand your symptoms and determine the appropriate next steps based on your dental needs and appointment availability.

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Dental emergencies vary in severity, and the appropriate treatment depends on the underlying cause. Recognizing common problems can help you decide when to seek professional dental care.

1. Severe Toothaches and Persistent Dental Pain

A sudden or ongoing toothache may develop because of tooth decay, a damaged filling, a cracked tooth, or inflammation inside the tooth. Pain that becomes intense, persists, or occurs alongside swelling should be evaluated promptly. A dentist can examine the affected area and recommend appropriate treatment.

2. Broken, Chipped, or Cracked Teeth

A broken or cracked tooth can cause sharp pain, sensitivity, or discomfort when chewing. Even a small crack may require attention to prevent further damage. Depending on the severity, treatment may involve dental bonding, a crown, or another restorative procedure.

3. Dental Abscesses and Infections

A dental abscess is a collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection. Symptoms may include throbbing pain, swollen gums, a bad taste in the mouth, or facial swelling. Dental infections can become serious if left untreated, so prompt professional evaluation is essential.

4. Knocked-Out or Loose Teeth

Dental injuries can occur during sports, falls, or accidents. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown rather than the root, and avoid scrubbing it. If possible, gently place it back in its socket without forcing it. Otherwise, keep it in milk or an appropriate tooth-preservation solution and seek immediate dental care.

5. Lost Fillings or Damaged Crowns

A missing filling or loose crown can expose sensitive areas and make chewing uncomfortable. Avoid chewing on the affected side and arrange a dental evaluation to determine whether the restoration can be repaired or replaced.

Emergency Dental Treatments We Offer

The right treatment for a dental emergency depends on the diagnosis, the condition of the affected tooth, and your overall oral health. After evaluating your symptoms, a dentist can explain the available options and help you make an informed decision.

1. Emergency Tooth Pain Treatment

Severe tooth pain may result from deep decay, infection, a damaged filling, or a cracked tooth. A dental examination helps identify the underlying cause and determine which treatment may relieve the discomfort and address the problem.

2. Emergency Root Canal Treatment

An emergency root canal may be recommended when the soft tissue inside a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. Deep decay, cracks, or dental injuries can damage the dental pulp and cause significant pain. Root canal treatment removes the affected tissue, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to help preserve the natural tooth when possible.

3. Emergency Tooth Extraction

In some situations, a tooth may be too damaged or infected to restore successfully. An emergency tooth extraction may be considered when other treatment options are unsuitable. Your dentist will assess the tooth, explain the available alternatives, and discuss what to expect during recovery.

4. Treatment for Cracked or Broken Teeth

Depending on the extent of the damage, treatment may include dental bonding, a filling, a crown, or another restorative procedure. Prompt evaluation can help protect the remaining tooth structure and restore function when possible.

5. Dental Infection and Abscess Treatment

Dental infections require treatment directed at their source. Depending on the condition, options may include drainage, root canal therapy, or extraction. Antibiotics may be appropriate in certain circumstances, but they do not replace necessary dental treatment.

6. Repair of Damaged Dental Restorations

A damaged crown or lost filling may require repair, replacement, or temporary protection until definitive treatment can be completed. Your dentist can assess the affected tooth and explain the available options.

What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Knowing how to respond before reaching a dentist may help protect your teeth and reduce the risk of further damage.

1. Assess Your Symptoms

Identify what happened and note any pain, swelling, bleeding, or sensitivity. Share these details when contacting the dental office.

2. Protect the Affected Tooth

Avoid chewing on the injured side of your mouth. Do not attempt to repair a broken tooth or force a displaced tooth into position.

3. Manage Swelling

Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for short intervals. Avoid placing aspirin directly on your gums because it may irritate the tissue.

4. Preserve a Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

Handle the tooth by the crown, keep it moist in milk or an appropriate tooth-preservation solution, and seek immediate dental care. Time is important when trying to save a permanent tooth.

5. Contact a Dental Professional

Explain your symptoms and ask how soon you should be evaluated. If you are searching for an emergency dentist near me, choose a provider who can assess your condition and advise you on the next steps.

Do not place aspirin directly on your gums or attempt to repair a damaged tooth yourself. If you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling, or severe facial trauma, seek emergency medical care immediately.

When Should You Seek Emergency Dental Care?

Not every dental problem requires immediate treatment, but certain symptoms should never be ignored. Persistent pain, swelling, bleeding, and injuries involving your teeth or gums may indicate a condition that needs urgent attention.

Seek emergency medical care or call 911 if you experience:

  • Severe or persistent tooth pain: Pain that interferes with eating, sleeping, or everyday activities may indicate decay, nerve inflammation, or infection.
  • Swollen gums or facial swelling: Swelling around a tooth can be a sign of an infection that requires prompt evaluation.
  • Broken or cracked teeth: Damage caused by an accident, sports injury, or biting something hard may expose sensitive inner tooth structures.
  • Knocked-out teeth: A permanent tooth that has been completely displaced requires immediate attention because timely care may improve the chance of saving it.
  • Uncontrolled oral bleeding: Bleeding that does not stop with appropriate pressure requires urgent assessment.
  • Dental restorations that fall out: A lost filling or crown may expose the underlying tooth and cause sensitivity or further damage.

If you experience these symptoms, contacting an emergency dentist in Chandler can help you understand the urgency of your condition and the treatment options available.

What to Expect During an Emergency Dental Visit

Understanding the process can help you feel more prepared when seeking urgent dental care.

Step 1: Dental Examination

The dentist reviews your symptoms and examines the affected tooth, gums, and surrounding tissues.

Step 2: Diagnostic Evaluation

Dental X-rays or other diagnostic procedures may be recommended to identify decay, fractures, infection, or damage that is not visible during a visual examination.

Step 3: Treatment Recommendations

After evaluating your condition, the dentist explains the findings and discusses suitable treatment options, including their potential benefits and limitations.

Step 4: Appropriate Dental Treatment

Depending on the diagnosis and available services, treatment may focus on addressing pain, infection, damaged teeth, or another urgent concern.

Step 5: Follow-Up Care

Some dental emergencies require additional restorative treatment or monitoring. Your dental team can explain any follow-up care needed to support your oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dental Care

What qualifies as a dental emergency?

Severe tooth pain, facial swelling, dental infections, knocked-out permanent teeth, significant fractures, and uncontrolled bleeding may require urgent evaluation. Difficulty breathing or swallowing requires immediate medical attention.

Can I find a same-day emergency dentist in Chandler?

Same-day appointments depend on the practice’s schedule and the nature of your dental concern. Contact the office directly, explain your symptoms, and ask about the earliest available appointment.

Is a 24-hour emergency dentist available in Chandler?

Some dental practices provide after-hours arrangements, while others operate during regular business hours. Contact the practice to confirm its availability. Seek emergency medical care for serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing or rapidly spreading swelling.

Do I need an emergency root canal for severe tooth pain?

Not necessarily. Severe tooth pain may result from decay, a cracked tooth, nerve inflammation, or infection. A dental examination is needed to determine whether root canal treatment or another procedure is appropriate.

When is emergency tooth extraction necessary?

Extraction may be recommended when a tooth is severely damaged, cannot be restored, or has a condition that makes preservation unsuitable. Your dentist will assess the tooth and discuss alternatives when possible.

What should I do if I have a dental abscess?

Contact a dental professional promptly if you suspect an abscess, particularly if you have pain, swelling, or fever. Do not attempt to drain it yourself. Seek emergency medical attention if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing or rapidly spreading swelling.

Should I visit an emergency room or an emergency dentist?

A dentist is generally best equipped to diagnose and treat the underlying cause of most dental problems. However, serious facial trauma, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or rapidly spreading swelling may require emergency medical care.

From the moment that you walk into this office you know that you're in a place of professionalism and that you'll be in good hands. We were greeted by a very pleasant receptionist, an excellent Dental Hygienist and Dr. Aaron Johnson making up the dental team that saw both my husband and myself. All three of these people were so pleasant, knowledgeable and professional. Even though we obviously were there for dental reasons, it felt as if we're back visiting old friends that we hadn't seen for a long time! If you're looking for a dental practice, look no further, because Progressive Dentistry & Orthodontics is the place for you!

I had a great experience at Progressive Dentistry. I have neglected caring for my gums in the past so I had pretty severe periodontal disease. From the moment I walked in to when I left everything was clearly explained and laid out for me, pricing was discussed beforehand and I was aware of every step. The staff and doctor were very friendly and informative. They spent ALOT of time during my deep clean making sure every bit was out and even following up with xrays more than once to verify. I am so grateful for my healthy new mouth and I will be going back to Progressive for all future dental care.
